How to read your grid
Each row is one year; each square is one week. Filled squares are weeks you have already lived, the single amber square is the week you are in right now, and everything after it is open. At the default 80-year setting the whole grid is 4,160 squares — small enough to fit on one screen, which is exactly why the format works. A lifetime measured in years feels abstract; measured in a countable number of squares, it becomes something you can actually look at. The idea has a long history, from the Stoic practice of memento mori to the poster version popularised online in the 2010s — the life calendar guide tells that story and gives landmarks for navigating the grid.
The honest arithmetic behind the numbers
An average Gregorian year is 365.2425 days, or 52.1775 weeks. That single constant produces every figure in the reference table below, which is the birthday-to-birthday average — your own count can differ by a week or so depending on where leap days fall in your life:

Two things usually surprise people. First, how small the numbers are: even at 70 you have lived fewer than 3,700 weeks. Second, how early the halfway mark of an 80-year grid arrives: half of 4,160 squares is 2,080 weeks — 14,560 days, or about age 39.9 — which lands roughly 7 weeks before your 40th birthday, not after it. Three worked examples
Every figure below is recomputed each time the site is built, by the same library the calculator runs on. These are the numbers it would have shown on August 3, 2026; open the tool above with the same birthday and the day counts will have moved on by however long it has been since.
Born June 15, 1995
This person has been alive 11,372 days, which is 1,624 completed weeks — 39.0% of a 4,160-square 80-year grid. Their 10,000th day already passed, on October 31, 2022, almost certainly without ceremony; their 20,000th falls on March 18, 2050. If the 80-year window held, about 2,550 Saturdays would remain. None of those numbers is a prediction — they are what the calendar says about one birthday and one chosen assumption.
Born February 29, 1988 — a leap-day birthday
Leap-day babies break naive date math, so we use them as a test case. As of August 3, 2026 this person has lived 14,035 days (2,005 weeks, 48.2% of an 80-year grid). Their 10,000th day was July 17, 2015, and their 20,000th arrives December 2, 2042. The tool counts actual calendar days, so the missing February 29ths between leap years are handled correctly rather than approximated.
Born March 10, 2008 — the youngest of the three
At 6,720 days and 960 weeks, this 18-year-old has filled 23.1% of an 80-year grid — and their 10,000th day is still ahead, on July 27, 2035, a few months after they turn 27. For someone this age the most striking view is usually the wallpaper export: most of the grid still open.
What people use this for
- A phone wallpaper that quietly recalibrates. The 1170×2532 export is built for exactly this — your real grid, on your lock screen.
- Marking milestone days. Your 10,000th or 20,000th day is a real date you can put in a calendar; the 10,000-days page is dedicated to it.
- Decision framing. "This project will take 100 weeks" reads differently when you can see what 100 squares look like against your remaining rows.
- Gifts and letters. A printed grid for a 30th or 40th birthday is a strangely moving object — cheaper than a poster and personal to the day.
- Teaching scale. The grid makes averages tangible for students in a way that "life expectancy is about 80" never does.
What this tool deliberately does not do
It does not predict your lifespan, adjust for your country, sex, habits or health, or pretend that an 80-year default means anything about you. Actuarial life tables exist and are genuinely interesting, but a single-number "you will die at X" output would be false precision, so we refuse to build one. You choose the horizon; the tool just does honest calendar arithmetic inside it. That is also why every stat is labeled against your chosen window rather than presented as fate.
